A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the murders of two persons in Saraswati Vihar area during the anti-Sikh riots. Special Judge Kaveri Bhaveja passed the conviction order and posted the arguments on sentence on Feb 18.
[00:00:36] Kumar was produced before court from Dihar Jail for the pronouncement. The case relates to the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarun Deeb Singh on November 1, 1984. Though Punjabi Bhak police station registered the case initially, a special investigation team later to go over the investigation. On December 16, 2021, the court framed charges against Kumar, finding a prima facie case against him. Israel threatened on Tuesday to resume intense fighting in Gaza if hostels were not released this weekend.
[00:01:06] Meanwhile, Hamas insisted it remain committed to the ceasefire deal and accuse Israel of violations. Under the terms of the ceasefire, which was largely halted, more than 15 months of fighting in Gaza, captives were to be released in bats in exchange for Palestinians in Israeli custody. So far, Israel and Hamas have completed five hostage prisoner swaps. However, the deal has come under increasing strain in recent days, prompting diplomatic efforts to salvage it. Hamas has reiterated that it is committed to the ceasefire.
[00:01:37] Manipur's BJP MLA Karam Shyam on Wednesday claimed that there is no constitutional crisis following the resignation of NB Reyn Singh as the chief minister on February 9. Shyam stated that the ongoing issues would be resolved by the centre with the help of legislators. He added that he was unaware of any plans to impose precedence rule but believed the leadership crisis would be addressed by the centre in coordination with the legislators.
[00:02:01] Meanwhile, experts have warned that, with no one staking claim to form the government so far, the BJP rule Manipur may head towards a constitutional crisis. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by a court in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh over his alleged defamatory remarks against the Indian Army in December 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma fixed March 24 as the date for the next hearing in the case. Gandhi will have to be present in the court.
[00:02:31] Earlier, on behalf of Udhishankar Srivastava, former director of Border Rod's organisation, lawyer Vivek Tiwari had filed a defamation complaint against Gandhi. According to the lawyer, Gandhi made the alleged derogatory comments on December 16, 2022 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Kerala reported the fourth human casualty in vile elephant attacks within a week after a man was trampled to death at Attamala in Vyanat on Tuesday night. The deceased is Balakrishnan, a native of Attamala.
[00:03:01] The Jumbo reportedly stormed Balakrishnan to death at HMLT plantation. He was on his way home with his friends after purchasing groceries. This is the second fatality recorded in Vyanat due to a vile elephant attack within 48 hours. Manu, a resident of the Kapa tribal settlement near Nolpura, was grabbed and flunked to death by a vile elephant on Monday night. The incident occurred in a region heavily inhibited by tribals.
[00:03:25] The latest death has happened at a time when the Forest Department and the state government are facing intense public outrage over the loss of human lives and frequent instances of vile elephants straying into human habitation.
