[00:01:22] Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused Congress and Rahul Gandhi of seeking the

[00:01:26] support of the now-banned Popular Front of India to secure the UDF candidacy win

[00:01:30] in Wayanad.

[00:01:31] Speaking at an election rally in Belgavi in Karnataka, Modi alluded to the SDPI's

[00:01:35] offer of support to the UDF as Gandhi seeking the support of the PFI.

[00:01:40] In his rampant attack on Gandhi, Modi said the Congress leader had insulted India's

[00:01:44] Rajas and Maharajas but remained silent on the atrocities committed by Nawabs, Nizams,

[00:01:49] Sultans and Bachchas for the sake of appeasement politics.

[00:01:55] The Supreme Court is scheduled here on Monday, a plea by Delhi Chief Minister

[00:01:58] Arvind Kejriwal challenging his arrest in a money-launtring case stemming from

[00:02:02] the alleged excise policy scam.

[00:02:04] A bench of justices Sanjeev Khanna and Deepakardatta is likely to hear the matter.

[00:02:09] Kejriwal had earlier told the Apex Court that his illegal arrest in the case

[00:02:13] comprises an unusual assault on the tenets of democracy based on free and fair

[00:02:17] elections and federalism.

[00:02:19] In response to the Enforcement Directorate's reply after Devid filed on his petition

[00:02:23] challenging his arrest, Kejriwal highlighted the timing and manner of his arrest just

[00:02:27] before the Lok Sabha elections.

[00:02:29] He emphasised that this occurred when the model court of conduct was in effect

[00:02:33] indicating the agency's arbitrariness.

[00:02:38] In a huge setback to the Congress, its Delhi unit chief Aravinder Singh-Lavli

[00:02:41] resigned for the party post on Sunday.

[00:02:43] This comes amid the ongoing seven-phase Lok Sabha elections and has Delhi

[00:02:47] scheduled to go to polls on May 25.

[00:02:50] In a four-page letter to party president Mallik Arjun Karghe on Wednesday,

[00:02:54] Aravinder Singh-Lavli expressed anguish over the functioning of the

[00:02:57] Congress General Secretary.

[00:02:59] He said,

[00:03:00] The government's decisions taken by the senior Delhi Congress leaders have been

[00:03:03] vetoed by the AICC General Secretary.

[00:03:05] Since I was appointed DPCC president, the AICC General Secretary has not

[00:03:09] allowed me to make any senior appointments in the DPCC.

[00:03:13] Lavli also expressed his dissatisfaction over the selection of

[00:03:16] candidates for the Lok Sabha elections for Delhi seats.

[00:03:21] Women comprise only 8 per cent of the total 1,618 candidates in the

[00:03:25] first two phases of the Lok Sabha polls with political activists saying it

[00:03:28] reflects a deeper issue of gender bias and that the talk of empowering

[00:03:32] them rings hollow.

[00:03:33] In the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls, there were 135 women candidates

[00:03:37] while in the second phase there were 100 women candidates bringing the

[00:03:40] combined total for the first two phases to 235 women candidates.

[00:03:44] Of the 135 women candidates in phase one, Tamil Nadu had the highest share

[00:03:48] at 76 but they account for just 8 per cent of the candidates in the

[00:03:51] state while Kerala has the maximum number of women candidates at 24

[00:03:55] in phase two.

[00:03:58] Amid severe heat in Kerala, the Indian Meteorological Department on

[00:04:01] Sunday issued a maximum temperature warning for 12 districts over the

[00:04:04] next five days.

[00:04:06] In Kollam, Palakkad and Trissur districts, there's a possibility of

[00:04:09] a heat wave in certain areas, according to the IMD and the Kerala

[00:04:12] State Disaster Management Authority.

[00:04:14] Maximum temperatures are very likely to be around 41 degrees Celsius in

[00:04:18] Palakkad district, around 40 degrees Celsius in Kollam and Trissur

[00:04:21] districts, around 38 degrees Celsius in Kottayam, Pattanam,

[00:04:24] Tittakulikode and Kannur districts and around 37 degrees Celsius in

[00:04:27] Alapuram, Ernakulam, Mallapuram and Kasargod districts and around

[00:04:30] 36 degrees Celsius in Thiruvanthapuram district during 28 April-2 May

[00:04:34] 2024, the weather agency said.
