[00:00:09] Hello, this is your Daily News of News from Onmanorama. I am your host Deepa Soman and these are the major news stories of Thursday, December 12, 2024.

[00:00:20] The Union Cabinet approved the One Nation One Election Bill on Thursday. The bill will be tabled in Parliament during the ongoing winter session. To pass it, it needs a two-thirds majority in both houses.

[00:00:34] The high-level panel, headed by former President Ram Nadhkovin, submitted the report in March before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.

[00:00:43] If passed, India will face Assembly polls and Lok Sabha elections simultaneously in 2029.

[00:00:51] The Supreme Court has issued an eight-point guideline to standardise the determination of alimony amounts in divorce cases.

[00:00:58] The court said various factors, including the social and financial status of the parties, reasonable needs of wife and children, qualifications and employment status of both parties and more, need to be considered while fixing the alimony amount.

[00:01:13] The latest decision comes in the backdrop of the tragic death of Bengaluru-based techie Atul Subhash from Bihar, who had recorded an 18-minute video before taking his life, alleging harassment by his estranged wife and her family.

[00:01:29] His 24-page suicide note also sharply criticised the judicial system.

[00:01:34] In an attempt to link the Aadhaar card with the National Register of Citizens, the Assam government has decided that all applications would be rejected if the applicant or the family had not applied to the NRC.

[00:01:47] Chief Minister Himanthabishwa Sharma said at a press conference that the decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting in view of an infiltration attempt by Bangladeshi citizens.

[00:01:58] From now on, the General Administration Department of State Government will be the nodal agency to verify the Aadhaar applicants.

[00:02:08] Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly preparing to assume their future roles as King and Queen.

[00:02:15] This is because of King Charles' health concerns and evolving responsibilities.

[00:02:20] Royal insiders have indicated that formal succession plans have developed since Charles' coronation in May 2023.

[00:02:27] Earlier this year, Princess Kate also underwent cancer treatment.

[00:02:33] The Riyadh Criminal Court on Thursday postponed the final verdict in the case of Abdul Rahim,

[00:02:38] who is serving an 18-year sentence for the alleged murder of a Saudi boy.

[00:02:42] This marks the fourth time the court has deferred its ruling.

[00:02:46] The virtual hearing was rescheduled due to technical issues.

[00:02:50] Abdul Rahim, a driver from Kori Kod, cared for a differently-abled boy in a Saudi family.

[00:02:55] During a car ride, a breathing aid used by the boy accidentally fell, leading to his loss of consciousness and eventual death.

[00:03:04] Although the incident was accidental, Rahim was charged with murder under Saudi law and sentenced to death.

[00:03:10] The court later revised the verdict after the boy's family agreed to accept blood money.

[00:03:16] That brings us to the end of this episode.
