[00:00:25] The controversial Citizenship Amendment Act came into effect today.
[00:00:29] The Ministry of Home Affairs handed over citizenship certificates to 14 people under
[00:00:34] the CAA.
[00:00:38] The Supreme Court declared NewsClick editor Prabir Purakayastha's arrest by Delhi
[00:00:43] police illegal.
[00:00:44] He was in custody since October 2, 2023.
[00:00:51] The United Nations launched an investigation into an unidentified strike on a UN car in
[00:00:56] Raffa on Monday that killed an Indian staff member.
[00:01:03] The National Disaster Response Force on Wednesday said the number of casualties going up in
[00:01:09] the Mumbai hoarding collapse tragedy cannot be ruled out as the chances of finding
[00:01:14] survivors are slim.
[00:01:18] The Supreme Court rejected a plea seeking pregnancy termination stating that a fetus
[00:01:24] has the fundamental right to live.
[00:01:26] Let's get into the details.
[00:01:31] The first set of citizenship certificates under the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA
[00:01:37] was issued on Wednesday in New Delhi to 14 people.
[00:01:41] It started the process of granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants
[00:01:46] from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
[00:01:50] And Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over the certificates to the 14 people after
[00:01:56] their applications were processed online through a designated portal, an official spokesperson
[00:02:01] said.
[00:02:03] The CAA was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted
[00:02:09] non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before
[00:02:15] December 31, 2014.
[00:02:18] These include Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsi and Christians.
[00:02:24] After the enactment, the CAA got the President's assent but the rules under which the Indian
[00:02:29] citizenship was granted were issued only on March 11 this year after over four years'
[00:02:34] delay.
[00:02:38] The Supreme Court on Wednesday declared as illegal NewsClick founder Praveer Purkayas
[00:02:43] as arrested by the Delhi Police and his remand in a case under the Unlawful
[00:02:48] Activities Prevention Act 1967.
[00:02:52] The Apex Court noted that a copy of the remand application was not provided to the
[00:02:56] appellant or his counsel before passing the remand order on October 4, 2023.
[00:03:03] Therefore, the bench of justices B.R.
[00:03:06] Gawai and Sandeep Mehta declared the arrest and subsequent remand invalid in the
[00:03:11] eyes of the law.
[00:03:12] The bench delivered the verdict after having concluded arguments on April 30.
[00:03:17] Purkayastha has been in custody since October 2, 2023.
[00:03:25] The United Nations has launched an investigation into an unidentified strike on a
[00:03:30] UN car in Raffa on Monday.
[00:03:33] The strike killed its first international staff in Gaza since October 7, a
[00:03:38] spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said.
[00:03:42] The staff member, a retired Indian Army officer named Vaibhav Anil Kale, was
[00:03:47] working with the UN Department of Safety and Security.
[00:03:50] He was en route to the European hospital in Raffa along with a colleague who
[00:03:54] was also injured in the attack.
[00:03:57] Israel has been moving deeper into Raffa in southern Gaza, where more than a
[00:04:02] million people had sought shelter.
[00:04:05] Its forces pounded the enclave's north on Tuesday in some of the fiercest
[00:04:09] attacks in months.
[00:04:12] Israel's international allies and aid groups have repeatedly warned against
[00:04:16] a ground incursion into Raffa, where many Palestinians fled, and Israel says
[00:04:21] four Hamas battalions are holed up.
[00:04:24] Israel says it must root out the remaining fighters.
[00:04:31] The National Disaster Response Force said the number of casualties going
[00:04:35] up in Mumbai's Khadkopar's holding collapse incident cannot be ruled out
[00:04:40] as the chances of finding survivors are slim.
[00:04:43] Two teams of the force along with the fire brigade and police have been
[00:04:47] working relentlessly since the last two days to rescue the people trapped under
[00:04:51] the billboard that collapsed on a petrol pump in Cheranagar area of Khadkopar
[00:04:56] on Monday evening.
[00:04:58] The hoarding fell due to gusty winds and unseasonal rains.
[00:05:02] So far, the search and rescue teams have pulled out 89 people from
[00:05:06] under the collapsed hoarding of whom 14 were declared dead while 75 others
[00:05:11] were injured.
[00:05:12] Two more bodies have been located under the debris, but they are
[00:05:16] yet to be pulled out, officials said.
[00:05:21] The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a plea of a 20-year-old
[00:05:25] unmarried woman seeking termination of her over 27-week pregnancy, saying
[00:05:30] the fetus in the womb also has a fundamental right to live.
[00:05:35] A bench headed by Justice B.R.
[00:05:37] Gawai passed the order while hearing the woman's plea challenging the
[00:05:41] Delhi High Court's May 3rd order refusing to allow termination of her
[00:05:45] pregnancy.
[00:05:47] Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, termination of pregnancy
[00:05:50] of a duration exceeding 24 weeks can be allowed in case of substantial
[00:05:55] fetal abnormality as diagnosed by a medical board or if an opinion is
[00:06:00] formed in good faith for the purpose of saving the life of the
[00:06:03] pregnant woman.
