[00:00:09] Hello, this is your Daily Dose of News from Onmanorama. I'm your host Vaishnavi and these are the major news stories of Wednesday, Jan 15, 2025. The Union Home Ministry approved the Enforcement Direct Rate's request to prosecute former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case. The Ahmadinej Party National Convener was named in the charge sheet filed by the ED last year after his arrest in March.
[00:00:37] Kejriwal is accused of being a key conspirator in the corruption and money laundering linked to the Delhi government's 2021-22 excise policy, which was later scrapped. Three Indian Navy warships INS Surat, INS Neil Giri and INS Vagshir were commissioned at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
[00:00:59] The commissioning of these advanced vessels strengthens India's defence capabilities and supports its push for greater self-reliance in defence production. All three vessels have been entirely designed and built inside the country, marking a significant achievement in its growing defence and shipbuilding capabilities. Meta India apologised for CEO Mark Zuckerberg's comments about the 2024 Indian elections. The remarks were made during the Joe Rogan podcast.
[00:01:27] Zuckerberg had said that many incumbent governments, including India, lost power in the 2024 elections. Meta India called the statement an inadvertent error and clarified that it was not accurate for India. In a statement on ex-Meta India's Vice President, Shivnath Tukral, apologised to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, stating that Zuckerberg's comment was a general observation, not specific to India.
[00:01:52] He emphasised that India is a crucial market for Meta and the company is committed to its future in the country. Impeached South Korean leader, Yoon Suk-yeol, was arrested after a failed attempt to impose martial law last month, becoming the first sitting president in the country's history to be detained. Yoon, who faces insurrection charges, had been evading arrest for weeks, using his residence as a stronghold with barricades and barbed wire.
[00:02:20] Yoon, who was arrested for years after a while, Yoon expressed willingness to comply with investigators to avoid bloodshed despite rejecting the legality of the arrest. Meanwhile, his supporters who had gathered at his residence protested the warrant, calling it illegal. The Kerala High Court accepted an apology from businessman Bobby Chammanoor after he refused to leave jail despite being granted bail.
[00:02:50] Chammanoor, accused in a sexual harassment case filed by actor Honey Rose, had been granted bail on Tuesday. However, he chose to stay in prison, citing solidarity with remanded prisoners facing difficulties in their release. Justice PV Kunyukarishnan criticized Chammanoor's actions as drama and reminded him that it is the court's responsibility to address the prisoners' concerns.
[00:03:13] The court also noted that the bail order was published on the High Court website at 4.8pm on Tuesday and instructed Chammanoor's counsel to prevent any further theatrics. That brings us to the end of this episode. Thanks for listening to Daily News Doors, hosted by me Vaishnabi and produced by Kannan.
