[00:00:09] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I am your host Swati Ajad and these are the major news stories of Thursday, Jan 16, 2025. Hindenburg Research's founder announced that he would disband the firm. The firm's reports triggered heavy selling by investors and investigations by the authorities, leading to billions being wiped off the market values of companies, including India's Adani Group and US-based Nikola.

[00:00:36] Nathan Anderson, who founded Hindenburg in 2017, explained his decision in a website post published on Wednesday. He cited the toll of the rather intense and at times all-encompassing nature of the work as the reason behind disbanding the firm. Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was injured in a knife attack by an intruder. The incident took place after a botched burglary attempt at his residence. The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday in Bandra.

[00:01:05] Khan was taken to the Dilawati Hospital and underwent surgery. Dilawati Hospital COO Dr Neeraj Uttamani said the actor sustained six stab injuries and two were deep. The actor underwent emergency surgery to remove a knife lodged in his spine following the attack. Doctors have confirmed that Khan is now out of danger and recovering at Dilawati Hospital.

[00:01:27] In a major decision, the government on Thursday decided to set up the Eighth Pay Commission to revise the salaries of central government employees and allowances of pensioners. The decision to set up the Eighth Pay Commission was taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, IMB Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said.

[00:01:43] The Central Pay Commission are usually established once every decade. Their main role is to evaluate and suggest changes to the pay scales, allowances and benefits for central government employees. This is done by considering various economic indicators, including inflation. Israel intensified strikes on Gaza hours after a ceasefire and hostage release deal was announced, residents and authorities in the Palestinian enclave said. Mediators are working to quell the fighting ahead of the truces start on Sunday.

[00:02:12] The complex ceasefire accord between Israel and Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, emerged on Wednesday. It followed months of mediation by Qatar, Egypt and the US after 15 months of bloodshed that devastated the coastal territory and inflamed the Middle East. The deal outlines a six-week initial ceasefire with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, where tens of thousands have been killed. Hostages taken by Hamas would be freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel.

[00:02:44] ISRO marked a significant milestone on Thursday by successfully performing an in-space docking of satellites as part of the space docking experiment. The mission, launched on December 30, 2024, saw two small satellites SDX-01 and SDX-02 successfully docked in orbit.

[00:03:03] The PSLV-C60 rocket carrying these satellites, along with 24 payloads, lifted off from the Satish Thavan Space Centre Sriharikota and deployed the satellites into a 475-kilometre circular orbit about 15 minutes after launch. SPAR-DEX serves as the cost-effective technology demonstrator for in-space docking, a crucial capability for missions involving multiple launches to achieve shared objectives. That brings us to the end of this episode.
