[00:00:08] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I am your host Deepa Soman and these are the major news stories of Tuesday, Feb 25, 2025. A Delhi court on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a murder case connected to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He was sentenced for the murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarum Deeb Singh on No. 1, 1984.
[00:00:34] The court on Feb 12 convicted Kumar for the offence and sought a report from the Tihar Central Jail on his psychiatric and psychological evaluation, given a Supreme Court order asking for such a report in cases attracting capital punishment. The complainant, Jaswant's wife, and the prosecution had sought maximum punishment for Kumar. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
[00:00:59] The Delhi government incurred total losses of over Rs 2,000 crore due to the 2021-2022 excise policy for reasons ranging from weak policy framework to deficient implementation, according to a CHG report tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday. The report, tabled by CHG also flagged violations in the process of issuing licenses.
[00:01:22] It has pointed out that recommendations of an expert panel formed to suggest changes for the formation of the now-scrapped policy were ignored by then-Deputy Chief Minister and Excise Minister Manit Sisodia. In a tragic incident in Vanyaramudu, Kerala, 23-year-old Afan confessed to killing five individuals, including his grandmother, uncle, aunt, younger brother and his girlfriend. The attacks occurred across three villages in Tiruantaviram district.
[00:01:51] Afan's mother was also critically injured and is receiving treatment at a private medical college hospital. Authorities are investigating financial issues and possible drug abuse as potential motives behind the murders. Afan is currently under medical supervision after claiming to have ingested poison following the attacks. French President Emmanuel Macron is doubling down on the commitment to securing a Ukraine-Russia ceasefire that has clear security guarantees.
[00:02:19] We want peace, a peace that does not mean Ukraine's capitulation or a ceasefire without guarantees, he says in a post on X this morning. These comments follow his meeting with US President Donald Trump yesterday, during which the French President stressed that any peace deal must not be a surrender of Ukraine.
[00:02:37] Rescue operations in Telangana's Nagarkurnul district have entered their fourth day as teams worked tirelessly to reach eight workers trapped inside the Sri Shilam Left Bank Canal channel since its collapse on February 22. Despite the efforts of over 500 personnel from various agencies, including the Indian Army, Navy and National Disaster Response Force, no contact has been established with the trapped individuals yet.
[00:03:03] Experts from the Geological Survey of India and the National Geophysical Research Institute have been consulted to assess the situation and advice on the rescue strategy. However, officials have expressed concerns about the workers' survival chances, citing significant debris and challenging conditions within the tunnel. That brings us to the end of this episode.
