About the film / What inspired us:
Sometimes all that one needs in life is a gentle push to be able to find one’s flight. While researching our news video feature we came across women at the lowest rung of Mumbai’s social ladder raising their voices in a rather unique way—they are breaking the shackles of age-old norms and stepping out to become small, and independent, entrepreneurs. This change is happening in the sprawling slums (shanty towns) in Eastern Mumbai. Shubha Benurwar, a social worker is helping them do so. What inspired us most to make this documentary feature were the bonds of solidarity and support they share which is vital to help them resist traditions and conventions that impede empowerment and equity. Their progress is an inspiration for all women.
