VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
In 2020, OpenAI was the hottest company in Silicon Valley. The world had not even met ChatGPT yet, but the Valley was already convinced that humanity was about to see its next Eureka moment. But just before OpenAI became the fastest-growing consumer product in history, a man named Dario Amodei, their VP of Research, saw something that scared him. Something so terrifying that he walked out of one of the most valuable companies on the planet, taking 6 of OpenAI's best minds with him, to start a rival called Anthropic. And what happened next became a Silicon Valley legend.
Now think about this for a second. When Dario left, OpenAI had everything. They had the best product in the world, the best talent on Earth, and a $1 billion check from Microsoft. And all Dario had was a whiteboard and a handful of believers. Elon Musk literally called them "misanthropic and evil." On every spreadsheet, in every boardroom, in every Silicon Valley dinner table conversation, this was a suicide mission. But here's the chart that is breaking the internet right now. Today, while ChatGPT has 900 million monthly users, Claude has just 30 million. That's 30 times fewer users. And yet, in April 2026, the lines crossed. By May, Anthropic hit a $47 billion run-rate, while OpenAI was still at $25 billion. A company with 30 times fewer users is now making nearly double the revenue.
And here's the part that should make every founder watching this stop scrolling. While an OpenAI customer pays just $25 a month, a Claude user pays $211 — eight times more per user. So in five years, Dario went from being called "evil" by Elon Musk to building the highest revenue-per-user AI company on Earth. And it all started with one scary discovery that nobody outside OpenAI knew about. So in this case study, I want to answer three questions that no media company is asking. What exactly did Dario see inside OpenAI that scared him so much that he walked away from a billion-dollar empire? If he was so scared of AI, why did he go and build another AI company that does the exact same thing? And most importantly, what is the one strategy that turned Anthropic from a "suicide mission" into the company that just overtook the legend?
