VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
Ladies and Gentlemen, on April 16, 2026, the Indian government introduced three bills, out of which one bill caused a raging political debate in the Parliament of India. This bill could fundamentally redraw the political map of the largest democracy on Earth. Since 1971, the Lok Sabha has had only 543 seats. At that time, India had 550 million people. Today, we have 1.4 billion. The population has nearly tripled, but the seats have remained exactly the same. Now, the Modi government wants to increase that number to 850. Sounds reasonable, right? More people need more representatives, which will lead to better governance. But as it turns out, there is something deeply problematic about this bill.
The southern parties of India fear that this one decision could permanently shift political power from India’s richest and most developed states to some of the poorest states in the country. They also fear that the states that did everything right, the states that controlled their population, invested in education, and built world-class economies, will be punished for doing well. This is the reason why there was massive outrage from the southern states of India against the government.
This is the story of how one bill turned into India’s biggest North vs South battle. So the question is: which bills were introduced in Parliament? What is so controversial about this one bill that MK Stalin burned copies of it? And why is this bill so critical for the future of India? Before I explain why southern chief ministers are literally burning copies of this bill, you need to understand a decision made 50 years ago.
