When Sula Vineyards went public in December 2022, it wasn’t the easiest time. Markets were volatile, sentiment was shaky, and investors wanted quick stories — not long fermentations.

As Rajeev Samant puts it, building wine is a patient business. It takes years of development before a single bottle reaches the shelf. But public markets don’t wait that long. They want quarterly updates, not vintages in progress.

Looking back, he says the decision made sense — when you take private equity capital, exits eventually follow. And while Sula didn’t get the valuation they’d hoped for, the market, in hindsight, wasn’t wrong either.
