From ‘authoritative marketer’ to PM — Girish’s story #startup #IPO #publiccompany

“I became a product manager because someone told me I was too authoritative for marketing.”

Before building Freshworks, Girish Mathrubootham didn’t even know what a product manager was.
He was frustrated in his marketing role — until a colleague took him out for chai and told him the truth:

“Marketing is consultative. You’re authoritative. You should build the product, not market it.”

So Girish did what any curious builder would do — he went back, googled “job responsibilities of a product manager,” and jumped in.

That chai conversation turned him into an accidental product manager, and eventually, one of India’s most iconic SaaS founders.

In this episode of The Blume Podcast, Girish Mathrubootham sits down with Karthik Reddy to talk about identity, experimentation, and the unexpected paths that shape great builders.
