The rise of the populist right – Part 3. March of the right brigade in India

What is a nation? And who does it belong to? In India, the far-right project aims for a nation defined by Hindutva, a single language – Hindi – and a tight control on what we eat, think, who we can marry, and a hierarchy based on religion and caste when it comes to rights, freedoms and resources. There is no space for cultural diversity. Sectarianism, casteism and authoritarianism have inflicted a tear in India’s social fabric, which will take a very long time to repair – if at all it can be. But democracy, multiculturalism, the rule of law, equality and the idea of India as envisaged when it gained freedom are worth fighting for. This is the final episode of the All Indians Matter series on the rise of the right.
